Online .docx editors and .docx in VS Code

Showing a .docx is easy; editing it without breaking it is much harder.

A Word file arrives and you do not have Word, or you live in VS Code. In the browser, Word for the web and Google Docs edit it; in VS Code, several extensions display it and very few edit it. Here is what each one does, checked on 4 October 2026, and where Paginel stands, including where it falls short.

Create an account Create my account My documents See the table

A single .docx file, opened by each tool: each has its cursor in it.

Easy and practical Nothing to install, one link to collaborate

Nothing to install

Open Paginel in the browser and write: on a computer, tablet or phone, without Word and without a licence. Your .docx files open as they are.

Collaborating is one link

Send a link or a code: your guests write with you, live, with no account and nothing to install.

Light, and offline if you want

The desktop app is only for working without internet: 24 MB to download on Mac, 19 MB on Windows. Microsoft 365 asks for 4 GB (Windows) or 10 GB (Mac) of free space; LibreOffice, up to 0.8 GB (macOS) or 1.5 GB (Windows). When the network returns, everything merges.

Paginel’s weight: version 0.1.0 of the app, measured on 4 October 2026. Disk space required by Microsoft and LibreOffice, read on 4 October 2026: these are free-space minimums, not the exact installed size.

In short Which one should you choose?

Viewing a .docx in VS Code

Office Viewer or Docx/ODT Viewer: free, open source (MIT), installed hundreds of thousands of times. An HTML preview, without real pages.

Reviewing with track changes

SuperDoc: in VS Code, it edits the .docx in place, with track changes, Word comments and an MCP server for agents. Open source (AGPL). Paginel does not do track changes yet.

Editing in the browser, together

Word for the web (file on OneDrive) or Google Docs: free with an account. On your own servers: ONLYOFFICE or Collabora Online.

Choose Paginel if…

  • you want to see the pages exactly as the PDF you will send
  • an agent writes into your Word file through a synced Markdown file
  • you write in Markdown and want a PDF laid out like a word processor’s
  • you co-edit with guests, hosted in France

In detail Who does what

In the browser

  • Word for the web: free with a Microsoft account, the native format, co-editing; the file must be on OneDrive or SharePoint, and part of Word desktop is missing. See Word vs Paginel.
  • Google Docs: edits a .docx without converting it and saves back to the original file, with its own layout; it flags the Word features it does not support. See Google Docs vs Paginel.
  • ONLYOFFICE and Collabora Online: open source, to install on your servers. ONLYOFFICE Docs 9.4 removed the 20-connection limit of its community edition; Collabora Online 26.04 (July 2026) adds an optional AI assistant, off by default. See ONLYOFFICE, Collabora, LibreOffice or Paginel.
  • Zoho Writer, CryptPad, Proton Docs: import and export .docx by converting it to their own format; CryptPad and Proton Docs are end-to-end encrypted. See Google Docs alternatives.

For developers: components to embed

These are not applications but building blocks to put a Word editor inside your own software. Paginel does not offer one.

  • SuperDoc (Harbour Enterprises): writes directly into the .docx XML, real pages, sections, headers and footers, complex tables, track changes, comments, co-editing (Yjs), in the browser. Dual licence: AGPL 3.0, or commercial (Business: $6,000 a year).
  • Syncfusion Document Editor: Word-like pagination; an internal format, with .docx going through a server-side service. Free Community licence under conditions (under $1M revenue, five developers at most), otherwise $1,199 per developer per year.
  • CKEditor 5: Word import and export through an online service, without pages; Word import requires the Professional plan ($289 a month).
  • DevExpress (about $2,300 per developer per year), TX Text Control ($4,198 per developer), Nutrient (on quote): proprietary editors, with a server-side engine for the first two.

In VS Code: .docx extensions

VS Code does not open .docx files on its own. Here are the extensions found on the Marketplace on 4 October 2026, from most to least installed. Most of them display the file; two really edit it.

  • Office Viewer (cweijan, 1,543,930 installs, version 4.2.0 of 16 August 2026, MIT): an HTML preview of the .docx (docx-preview), without real pages; a visual Markdown editor.
  • Docx/ODT Viewer (ShahilKumar, 406,233, 1.4.3 of 16 August 2026, MIT): read only; the file is converted to HTML (mammoth.js), without pages.
  • Docx Renderer (AdamRaichu, 75,246, 1.1.3 of 23 January 2024): read only, approximate HTML rendering (docx-preview); no new version since 2024.
  • Document Viewer (Syncfusion, 66,135, 4.0.5 of 13 July 2026, free and proprietary): viewing and light editing of .docx, .doc and .rtf; also opens PDF, Excel workbooks and Markdown.
  • Docx Viewer (Leon-pw, 32,130, 1.0.1 of 25 April 2025): read only.
  • Office Editor (shubhamprajapati1202, 26,522, 1.0.1 of 2 May 2026, MIT): edits .docx, but warns that complex formatting (headers, footers, macros) may be simplified on save.
  • SuperDoc – Word Document Editor (7,476, 2.18.1 of 5 August 2026, AGPL 3.0): in-place editing, autosave, track changes, Word comments in the margin, reload when the file changes, MCP server for agents, all local.
  • Office Viewer – DOCX, XLSX, PPTX (silurus, 1,907, 0.88.0 of 21 September 2026, MIT): read only, paged rendering by a Rust (WebAssembly) engine; the author warns that headers, footers and notes are still imperfect. Optional MCP server.
  • ShowDocx (249, 1.2.1 of 1 September 2026, MIT): paged viewing according to its author, diff against the last git version, HTML, Markdown and PDF export, tools for agents.

For Markdown to PDF, the most installed extension is Markdown PDF (yzane, 4,188,165 installs): a web-page PDF, not a word-processor layout.

SuperDoc and Paginel: the closest pair

SuperDoc and Paginel start from the same idea: write into the .docx itself, without converting it, with real pages. Here are the differences, plainly.

  • SuperDoc does better: track changes, editable tables, Word comments shown in the margin; an MCP server in the extension; open-source code (AGPL) that you can read and embed.
  • Paginel does it differently: a PDF view identical to the exported PDF (PDF/A, tagged PDF); Markdown that becomes a laid-out document, with four views (Markdown, Web, Edit, PDF); a Markdown file synced with a Word file for agents; a platform hosted in France, with co-editing and guests by code, no server to set up.
  • Price: the SuperDoc extension is free; embedding SuperDoc in a closed-source product requires the commercial licence ($6,000 a year for Business). Paginel is free during the beta; afterwards a free plan and €20 a year (VAT incl.) are planned. Paginel is not open source.

Paginel in VS Code

The Paginel Text extension opens a .docx (by default) or a Markdown file (on request) in the full Paginel interface, without leaving VS Code: the four views, the menus, PDF export. Saving is faithful: what Paginel does not understand or did not touch stays as it was in the file. It can keep a Markdown file next to the Word file, which your agent (Claude Code, for example) reads and edits; its changes are merged into the Word file paragraph by paragraph. See the extension page.

Preview version: not on the Marketplace yet (a .vsix file, on the Download page), tried on macOS only; signing in and online editing have not been tried on the real platform yet.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a .docx in VS Code?

With an extension: VS Code cannot read .docx files on its own. For a simple preview, Office Viewer or Docx/ODT Viewer; to edit the file, SuperDoc or Paginel Text (preview version).

Can I edit a Word document in VS Code?

Yes, with a few extensions: SuperDoc (track changes and comments included), Paginel Text (faithful saving, PDF view, Markdown for agents; no editable tables yet), Office Editor (which warns that complex formatting may be simplified) and, for light edits, Syncfusion’s Document Viewer.

Which free online .docx editor?

Word for the web and Google Docs, free with an account. ONLYOFFICE and Collabora Online, free as community editions, to install on a server. Paginel is free during the beta.

Paginel or SuperDoc?

SuperDoc if you review with track changes, if your documents are full of tables, or if you need an open-source component to embed. Paginel if you want to check pages exactly as the PDF, start from Markdown, or co-edit online with guests, hosted in France.

Honestly What Paginel does not do (yet)

  • Paginel is in beta, open to everyone and free. It is a young product.
  • Tables cannot be edited yet: tables in a .docx show as plain lines (cells separated by tabs), on screen and in the PDF. Saving into the original file keeps them intact. A document full of tables is not for Paginel yet.
  • No track changes and no suggestion mode. Comments exist in Paginel, but are not yet written into the .docx.
  • Word comments are not shown when a file opens (they stay in the file).
  • The VS Code extension is a preview: not on the Marketplace, tried on macOS only, signing in to the platform not yet tried for real. In VS Code, fonts embedded in a Word file are not used for the PDF yet: a document with rare fonts may paginate slightly differently than in the desktop app.
  • No MCP server in the extension: agents go through the synced Markdown file (MCP is available for shared documents).
  • Paginel is not a component to embed in your software.
  • Without Microsoft’s fonts, Paginel uses free fonts with the same metrics (Calibri becomes Carlito, Arial becomes Liberation Sans), unless the document embeds its own: the layout is close to Word, not guaranteed identical.
  • Paginel is not open source: its code is not published.
